Way back in 1992 I (VK4FW) first visited this island with Len Holbrok VK8DK.

We both used VK9LD, and quickly realised what it was like to be on the end of a huge  pile up!

We were both very fortunate to meet Tony Blasl the original VK9LA and our friendship became strong ever so quickly.

When Tony decided to retire and leave Lord Howe Island it was the end of an era. Both he and Dick VK9LH had for many years kept LHI off the wanted list. We applied for the VK9LA callsign when Tony left to live at Hervey Bay and our aim is to keep his memory alive.

Lord Howe Island is ranked 63 on the latest wanted list and in some parts of Europe as high as 23. .

Tony IZ3ESV, San K5YY, Bob N2OO, Lance N2OZ, Stan SQ8X, Peter SQ9DIE, Victoria SV2KBS, Tex VK1TX, Luke VK3HJ,

Chris VK3QB, John VK4IO, Catherine VK4VCH, Chris VK5CP, Jay W5SL, John VK5PO & Bill VK4FW

were active on these bands 160m – 6m on SSB, CW and RTTY including the CQ WPX SSB Contest.

ODXG set up  7 stations on air utilizing a massive antennae system which included 3 and 5 element monoband yagis,

quarter wave verticals, top loaded verticals as well as wires slung from the huge pine trees in 2 different  areas.
